About Us
Some of the best ideas are born from personal necessity. For Tiziana, the founder of Botaneca, that necessity came from her own skin. Nearly twenty years ago, while working as a nurse, the harsh soaps and sanitizers required in clinical settings left her hands severely dry and cracked. Commercial soaps offered little relief.
She started researching and eventually landed on cold process soap making. It worked. Her skin healed, and somewhere along the way a hobby turned into an obsession. After years of making soaps for herself, friends, and family, she took it further and completed her Diploma in Personal Care Formulation at the Institute of Personal Care Science. That training, combined with her nursing background and a genuine curiosity about how ingredients work, gave Botaneca its defining character: products that are not just beautiful, but scientifically sound.
Twenty-five years of nursing, including time in emergency medicine and healthcare leadership, informs everything about how she approaches formulation. Safety is not a marketing angle for Tiziana. It is just how she thinks.
Botaneca launched in 2019 with a straightforward belief: skincare should be honest and it should work. The name comes from "botanical" and "apotheca," the Latin and Greek word for a place where herbs and remedies are stored. Every product honours that heritage, combining carefully chosen ingredients with purposeful, science-driven formulation, handcrafted in small batches in Bradford, Ontario.
Our approach to formulation has evolved honestly over time. When we started, the goal was to be completely natural, using only plant-based, minimally processed ingredients in every product. In practice, sticking to fully natural formulations meant we kept running into the same wall: something would work beautifully but not stay stable, or it would be stable but out of reach for most budgets. We decided we were not willing to keep making that compromise. Now we choose ingredients based on whether they are safe, whether they work, and whether they were sourced responsibly. Plant-derived or lab-made, that is what matters to us. The word "natural" has no regulated definition in cosmetics anyway, and we would rather be honest with you than hide behind a term that means different things to different people. What you will always find in a Botaneca product is transparency about what is in it and why.
Ingredient sourcing matters to us in ways that go beyond the label. We actively seek out palm oil free alternatives where possible, sourcing from suppliers who use vegetable sources other than palm where we can confirm it. When palm derivatives cannot be avoided in processed ingredients, we choose suppliers who use mass balance certified palm oil through the RSPO. We do not use ingredients derived from endangered or threatened species. These are sourcing decisions we make every time we place an order.
We are not a certified sustainable brand and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that we make considered choices at every step: keeping production local, making in small batches, and selecting packaging thoughtfully. We are a small business that is still growing, and we are honest about what that means.
Whether you are just beginning your skincare journey or refining a well-loved routine, Botaneca is here to bring calm, comfort, and confidence to your everyday self-care. We are grateful for your support of a small, independent business built on honesty, clinical knowledge, and genuine care for the people who use what we make.
